Top Quality Lab Fume Hoods

Fume hoods are critical safety devices used in laboratories and industrial environments to protect users from harmful fumes, vapors, gases, and airborne contaminants. These devices are designed to contain and exhaust hazardous substances away from the user and the environment.

Basic Fume Hood Types

1. Ducted Fume Hood: A fume hood that expels fumes and air contaminants outside through a ventilation system.

2. Ductless Fume Hood: A ductless hood filters and recirculates air back into the room.

Ducted Fume Hoods

Some important aspects of ducted fume hood selection are as hereunder:

Fume Hood Airflow Pattern for Ducted Hood

1. CAV (Constant Air Volume): Maintains a fixed airflow rate regardless of changes in sash position.

2. VAV (Variable Air Volume): Adjusts the airflow rate based on the sash position to maintain constant face velocity and improve energy efficiency.

Fume Hood – Bench Mounted & Walk-In

1. Bench Mounted Hood: Needs a base for installation. These laboratory hoods are mounted on base cabinets or heavy-duty tables.

2. Walk-In Fume Hoods: Mounted directly on the floor, these hoods are used for large-scale applications.

Fume Hood Design Based on Laboratory Applications

1. General Chemistry Hoods: Designed to capture and exhaust hazardous fumes, vapors, and particles generated during chemical experiments. Operate at 100 fpm face velocity.

Ductless Fume Hood

Because ducted fume hoods exhaust contaminated air outside the facility they are ideal for applications that generate high volumes of hazardous vapors or those that work with a wider range of chemical families.
Ductless fume hoods are ideal for applications that have lower volumes of hazardous vapors and benefit from the greater flexibility and potential cost savings of a ductless unit. Ductless hoods are also efficient for applications like Chemical Transfer · Dilution · Mixing · Buffer Preparation · Applications with minimal heating · Titration · pH testing
Ductless fume hoods typically rely on activated carbon filters which adsorb vapors, aerosols and volatile chemicals generated on the work surface.
When fitted with HEPA or ULPA filters, ductless fume hoods function as a Class I BSC and can also provide particulate protection

Basic Ductless Fume Hood:

The Purair® BASIC Series ductless fume hoods are compact, ideal for use in laboratory environments where space is limited or where only small volumes of harmful substances are handled

Advanced Ductless Fume Hood:

The Purair® ADVANCED Series ductless fume hoods are available in 7 standard sizes in metal or polypropylene construction. This Series of high-efficiency products is designed to protect the user and the environment from hazardous vapors generated on the work surface.

The Purair® FUMEBOX™ is designed to protect the user from chemicals, vapors or non-toxic powders during low-volume chemical manipulations by effectively containing low concentrations of noxious fumes, vapors, or powders.

Purair® DWS™ Downflow Workstations are ductless fume hoods designed to protect the user and the environment from hazardous vapors generated on the work surface. Unrestricted front and side access permits applications requiring complex user involvement. Downward airflow in the chamber protects the operator.

The Purair® RX Balance Hood is a Class I enclosure that meets USP 800 requirements for non-sterile compounding procedures.

The EDU™ Series Ductless Demonstration Fume Hoods for individual and group applications protect the user and the classroom environment from hazardous vapors. Clear front, side and rear walls permit 360° visibility.

General Questions on Ductless Fume Hoods:

Which fume hood type is suitable for Hydrochloric Acid, Sulfuric acid and Glacial Acetic Acid?
If application involves, transferring, dilution, titration and no force evaporation, Ascent™ Max ductless fume hood with Nanocarb™ carbon filter type B is recommended. If application involves heat and these acids are used frequently with high volume, Frontier™ Acid Digestion ducted fume hood (EFQ) is recommended. This is a specialized ducted fume hood designed to withstand acids and high temperatures.

How can I determine which ductless fume hood model is suitable for my application?
SAI Systems offers chemical service assessment that helps customers determine the proper ductless fume hood model and appropriate filter based on their application. This chemical evaluation also estimates the carbon filter life. How can we determine if the carbon filters are saturated or needs to be replaced?
Our ductless fume hoods have an option of adding a VOC sensor. This sensor activates audio-visual alarms when the carbon filter is nearing saturation. For certain models of our ductless fume hoods, there is a built-in sample port where color detection tubes can be used to manually determine filter saturation. Gas detectors such as Draeger Accuro pump or RAE meter are also recommended. These apparatus are placed above the exhaust flow to test the concentration of the gases/chemicals present. The actual ppm is checked against the OSHA guideline for PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit). If it’s still comfortably below the limit, the carbon filter is still effective.
