Laboratory Furniture

Generalized Information on Laboratory Furniture

Depending on the type of laboratory and material of construction used, lab furniture can be procured from our Painted Steel, Stainless Steel, Wood, PLAM, Polypropylene or Maple and Oak construction specified above. However, there are several terms used by the Canadian scientific and laboratory community for lab furniture or lab casework. Below is a highlight of key questions and clarifications on terms which may be helpful for making an informed decision.

What is lab furniture?

Lab furniture refers to specialized furniture designed for laboratory environments to support scientific research, experiments, and testing. Unlike regular office furniture, lab furniture is built with durable, chemical-resistant, and often fire-resistant materials to ensure safety, hygiene, and efficiency in handling chemicals, biological specimens, and scientific equipment. Lab furniture or lab casework offered must be tested to S.E.F.A Standards.
Feature Lab Furniture Office Furniture
Material Made from chemical-resistant, fire-resistant, and durable materials like stainless steel, epoxy resin, or phenolic resin Made from wood, metal, or laminate
Design Designed for safety, cleanliness, and storage of hazardous materials Designed for comfort, aesthetics, and organization
Usage Used in scientific experiments, chemical handling, and research Used for administrative work, meetings, and general office tasks
Ergonomics Often flexible, designed for standing work, and resistant to spills Designed for comfort and long sitting hours
Storage Includes fume hoods, chemical storage cabinets, and lab-specific shelving Includes filing cabinets and general storage drawers
What is lab casework: Casework terms is used for cabinets that are usually available in standard sizes and can be selected from a catalog. Laboratory casework components like laboratory cabinets, are shipped pre assembled from factory including doors/drawers, handles, hinges, levelling bolts etc. Laboratory countertops are also pre-cut to sizes with pre-drilled holes and cutouts for sinks before shipping to job site. Minor cutting and adjustments can be done at the site but major work is done at factory.
